Put the device down...😡😤📱
We say it to our kids all the time-- perhaps we need to say it to ourselves more often as well.
We are so grateful for your continued support of our work here at Team KJ. If you’re a sports parent or perhaps just trying to do better and be better and are enjoying our content, we’d be so grateful if you would like and share our work. Thank you!
Our phones have become constant companions, occupying our attention at all hours of the day (and night). They buzz and beep, demanding our immediate attention, often pulling us away from the present moment and the people right in front of us. I've noticed how often we're together physically but mentally miles apart, lost in the digital abyss. Next time you’re out to eat at a restaurant, have a look around. How many people are on their phones, even when sitting with someone? I’ve seen tables of people not speaking to one another or even looking up from their phones. We’re losing connection and community and it’s causing alarming rates of anxiety and depression.
Why?
Because we’re on our phones so much these days, taking a break from our phones can induce short-term panic. In fact, I know of a high school student who actually got a note from her doctor to show her teacher that she can’t be separated from her phone or it will cause her anxiety. Yikes.
Getting off your device can also be incredibly liberating. Taking a break gives us the opportunity to reconnect first with ourselves and then with our surroundings in a deeper, more meaningful way. Without the constant distractions, we can fully immerse ourselves in the present moment, savoring each experience without the urge to document or share it online.
Here’s one tip I love that I’m going to try on our family’s Hawaiian vacation in July: feel free to snap all the pictures and videos you want, but stay off of social media the entire vacation. (Delete the apps if you have to). Then when you’re home, do one big post (aka photo dump) of the adventure.
This will liberate you in several ways. First of all, it will help you “live more in the moment”. Rather than posting after each trip to the beach, meal or snorkeling adventure, you can spend the time just discussing it with your family. And second, you can relieve yourself from constantly hitting refresh to see how many likes and comments your fun adventure received. Finally, it allows for some editing to happen. When you’re back home from your vacation, it’s fun to review all the pictures and it will help you just post what mattered most to you. Heck, you may even decide not to share about it- it was just THAT good!
Another approach is to try it in your daily life. Below are some suggestions for helping “declutter” your phone. Decluttering your life is something I speak about at length in my Mindset Mastery course 👇 Get on the waiting list here for our next class coming up in early October.
Getting rid of what is not serving us is SO important so we can allow for more of the goodness in. Life is seasonal. For those of us in the Northern hemisphere, summer is here and is a season of growth, so let’s prune back the branches (declutter) which will allow for more purposeful, peaceful and ultimately healthier growth.
Who in? What seems the hardest?
I love that this post is right across from my house and I walk Poppy past it every day. (It would seem Elizabeth Banks is a neighbor! Who knew?!) Every year someone puts it up and it inevitably gets torn down, but I love the resilience and how it keeps showing up.

One year ago this week, my first books arrived from the publisher (My “This is so happening moment!” ) I also recorded the audible version. If you’ve downloaded the Audio version, we’d be so grateful if you would rate and review it.
Thank you for your continued support, it means the world to our little but mighty team of three as we continue to try new things and see where each new step is going to take us.
