Seven years ago, I was in the messy middle of my sports parenting journey. Three kids ages 17, 14, and 12, who were all playing competitive youth sports. I was looking for answers to so many questions like:
Is it normal to not having summer vacations that don’t involve a youth sports tourney?
Is it normal that some families pay all their fees while other “more talented” athletes get to play for free?
Why do I feel like a bad parent for prioritizing a Thanksgiving family get together over a freshmen basketball practice?
My kid is the smallest one on the court? Should I give up hope of them ever making a high school team?
Did we miss the boat by not spending the money to join the “shoe team?”

I’m so grateful for all of the parents who reach out asking to connect. Most calls start something like, “It’s me. I’m the problem. I love my kid SO much that I don’t want to screw this up. He/she is 12 years old and I feel like I’ve already messed it all up.
I know the feeling. And I’d love to say it gets easier as they get older, but as the cliche goes, “Little kids, little problems. Big kids, bigger problems.” And we never quite get over the parenting label, no matter what age our kids grow to.
I’m excited to share with you a new version of my podcast, “Raising Athletes: Mom’s Edition”. I know I LOVE speaking to others who are having success in areas I want to grow in. So I’m going to be canvasing the U.S. for those “carpooling, snack-organizing, working two jobs to pay for the sports your kid loves, Moms.”
And on July 21st, we’ll drop a special episode of the podcast with mother of three, Randi Mahomes. Randi’s oldest, Patrick, now a household name, is the quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs. He’s led them to seven consecutive AFC Championship Game appearances since becoming their QB in 2018. He is one of five quarterback in NFL history to win three of more Super Bowls as a starter. Mahomes is widely considered one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.
I’m excited to welcome Randi to our home here in LA next week, where we’re going to have long chat about her journey and the life lessons she’s learned while raising three kids in Tyler, Texas.
Do you have a question you’d like me to ask Randi? Please respond here with any questions or comments you’d like to share with her.
Let’s all hold hands and support one another, because parenting never ends.

In the meantime, please feel free catch up on most recent episodes here , there are SO many good ones. I had a mom reach out to me the other day and ask, “How do you get so many great guests?” I love what I do and love learning alongside you listeners. Thank you so much for supporting this substack and my work.🫶
I love this post! Reminds me of how my husband drove the boys to and from Loyola from Lake Arrowhead for Thanksgiving weekend basketball practices so we could still have our family Thanksgiving weekend with his family. Excited to hear this podcast!
