We're closing in on another milestone...
Keep doing the work. Keep showing up. The little stuff is the big stuff.
We’re almost to 700 subscribers! And we’re coming up on 9 months since my book came out …. And oh, what an amazing year it has been. 🥳
I’ve been racking up the airline miles speaking in NYC, Buffalo, Boston, Williamsburg, VA, Portland, OR, (twice!), LA (x12), Dallas (3 times, 4th coming May 6), Missoula, MT (once and going again May 15th). Phew. I’m grateful. And honored. And yes, I am also tired. But every time I think about sitting down, another great idea blows in and I must say, “Yes!” That is was this is all about. I’m never disappointed when I say yes to adventure.
Thank you to all of you who have supported me and Raising Athletes Podcast Susie Guth Walton, the Raising Empowered Athletes book and audible version. It is such a thrill to have people reach out and say, “I’ve listened to your podcast and love your book! I channel you on the sidelines or in the car ride home with my kids.”
Much of the work I’ve been doing for the last ten plus years I’ve created at no charge, including many free talks, the podcast, and the free newsletter. If you like and appreciate the work on sports, parenting, growth and grit, and would like to see more of it (like the new Mindset Mastery course we just launched!), we’d so appreciate you becoming a paid subscriber so we can continue to create new and better content. Here’s a quote from a current student in our workshop:
We’ve sold over 4,000 copies in the first 9 months. I’m down to my last 50 hardbacks and they are gone forever. Get ‘em while they are hot, folks!
We are now booking talks for Fall 2024. Kirsten will travel! So if you know a school, club, college or organization who could benefit from hearing a message about supporting our athletes and ourselves (parents and coaches) in a way that is not only sustainable but also enjoyable and fulfilling, please reach out!
Wishing you all the most joy and success on the parenting journey. As my youngest kid, Kylie, graduates from high school in a few short weeks (sigh), I find myself reflecting on our journey- the good, the bad, and the ugly. My wish for my kids is that they grow to be resilient, strong and brave adults who are not afraid of failure, who are willing to go for what they want, and regardless of the outcome feel empowered over their destiny. We are only as good as our last “swing”… keep swinging.
Happiness is on the other side of fear.
Thank you to everyone who attended the Daily Rituals workshop! There have been so many amazing takeaways each week and we hope everyone is beginning to see the differences in their life.
Are you someone who has wished you had a meditation practice? Join us for next Monday’s workshop, Kirsten will be discussing meditation techniques, how this daily habit can benefit your life and will take us through a guided meditation so you can experience it first hand.
It’s not too late to join!

Where’s KJ?
I sat down with a very special student athlete, my 23-yr old son, MBA grad student at Claremont Grad University (CGU) and member of the Claremont-McKenna-Scripps (CMS) men’s basketball team, Caelan.
We talked about the ups and downs of his basketball journey. I’ve lived it through a parenting lens, but it was wonderful to hear about it from his perspective. What he’s learned along the way about himself and what he values. It wasn’t easy or simple, but he explains at the end how his belief in his mission was a guiding light in getting through the dark times and led him to an incredible year in 2024.
And he’s not done yet! He’ll enter his final year of hoops next Fall. I can’t wait to follow his continued growth.
I had a wonderful whirlwind visit to a place our family called home for 6 years, Portland, Oregon. I spoke at the Multnomah Athletic Club (MAC). IYKYK. To parents and some young athletes. Even was asked my favorite question ever by a wise 8-year-old, “What’s your favorite color?” YEL-LOW! (His too— fast friends)
Thank you to all who came out, including 6 friends from our NIKE days, some of whom I haven’t seen for more than a decade. How lucky am I to have friends who come to support me ALL these years later.
Meditation
With Kirsten’s meditation workshop coming out this week, I thought it would be a good time to share how important it is for me to have a clear headspace. During my junior year of college, I found myself carrying around a lot of unnecessary pressure. I felt as if it was my job to be everything for everyone. I wanted to be the perfect player, teammate, captain, son, and friend. The only thing I wasn't trying to be was the perfect person for myself. I thought I was doing it right by living for other people first and myself second. It was my assistant coach at the time who pointed out to me that if I don’t take care of myself first, I can never be fully available for the people around me that I care about. Ironically, it was the people who I wanted to be fully available for that I was letting down. This is when I started to add some practices that allowed me to check in with myself first and foremost in order to be more available to others. This is when I began to meditate on a daily basis.
Every morning before I would pick up my phone or go to practice or consider anyone else, I would get out of bed, walk to my desk chair, sit and begin to just breathe. I would then focus on my body, scanning through and checking in with what may be tight, sore, uncomfortable, or just take the time to notice my whole self. Through this process thoughts would start to pop up about my potential stressors, most of which revolved around other people and what they were struggling with. Meditation helped me address these issues unemotionally and identify whether it was something that should actually cause me stress or not. Mediation is still part of my daily practice today and still allows me to control where I direct my energy and where I don’t.
